What is reformer pilates anyway?

Loren Greenwood | FEB 14, 2024

Pilates is derived from 34 exercises that Joseph Pilates named “Contrology”. These exercises (by the book) are performed in order as Matwork.

A reformer is a bed with a moving carriage that uses springs as resistance. It is one of the many pieces of apparatus that Joseph invented in his lifetime.

Joseph developed the early reformers out of hospital beds, when he was working in a hospital in world war one. He wanted to support patients to develop their strength while they were still bed bound.

Thankfully the reformers in studio don't give many hospital bed vibes, but we are sure Joseph would be impressed with their ability to 'coordinate the mind, body and spirit'.

Our classes combine a mixture of original 'contrology' moves and classic push/pull and compound movements found in resistance training. We aim to provide a full body workout.

We have accessories like free weights, Pilates balls and jump boards that we may use to add challenge, variety and fun to classes.

Reformer classes are typically taught in a 'flow', which means they are choreographed by your instructor and you are guided through the movements on the day.

And the best part? Moving on a reformer is fun, challenging and there's plenty of variety to keep things interesting. So many opportunities to experience that Pilates burrrn (IYKYK 🔥). With regular practice you can master a variety of foundational movements, and maybe even cut some impressive shapes you never thought were possible!

We provide layers of challenge, meaning you are welcome to choose your challenge. Remember it's your body, your class. We are here to provide guidance and suggestions, it's up to you to do what feels best in your body on the day.

Stop for a break at any time and if you are unsure of anything give your instructor a wave, we are here for you.

😺🐮
